Join us for the Vancouver Island Poker Run on August 10, 2019. The event starts at 4PM Pacific time (2300Z) and runs for four hours. In that time, land at as many of the six qualifying airports as you can and collect a poker hand. If you collect all six cards, the least valuable card will be discarded. The top three poker hands are eligible for bragging rights (and FS Economy prizes if you're part of that world).
Fly IFR or VFR, it doesn't matter. Four of the fields are uncontrolled, but we will have staff manning the ATF at Port Alberni and the MFs at Qualicum Beach, Tofino, and Nanaimo. When you land at a qualifying airport between 2300 and 0300z and are clear of the maneuvering area, ask the staff manning the frequency for a card! Please be patient while the card is generated and relayed to you before starting your next flight.
The top three hands will be announced on the frequency.
Charts are available at fltplan.com.
Guide to aerodromes
CYYJ - Frequency 119.70. ATIS 118.80. Regular tower-controlled procedures - call "Victoria Tower". GA parking is at the Victoria Flying Club at base of the control tower ("the Club"). Right hand circuits runways 09, 21 & 32.
Arrivals: Runways 14, 21, and 32 are available for arrivals even when not indicated in the ATIS - just ask Tower on first contact.
Departures: VFR aircraft call Delivery for a squawk code if they are online. Runways 32 and 03 are available for departures even when not indicated in the ATIS - just ask when calling for taxi.
CYQQ - Frequency 126.20. ATIS 118.60. Although military, regular tower-controlled procedures apply - call "Comox Tower". The ceiling of the tower control zone is 6,000', 15 nm. Report inbound at least 20 nm out. Civil aircraft parking is labelled 'CVAC Ramp' on the charts. Right hand circuits runway 30 & 36.
For the aerodromes listed below, separation from other traffic in the air and on the ground is your responsibility at all times. Keep yourself separated and leave lots of space!
CYCD - Frequency 122.10. ATIS 128.425. MF airport. MF procedures. Call "Nanaimo Radio".
There is GA parking all along taxiways A and C. Taxiway G and Apron 2 are not recommended. Right hand circuits runway 16.
Report inbound when in range and the FSS will provide an advisory. Once you have received the advisory, report how you intend to join the circuit (you can join overhead cross to the downwind, straight to the downwind, on the 45 to the downwind, base leg, or final). Report again joining the circuit. FSS will probably ask you to report final. Report again when clear of the runway (and advise where on the field you are taxiing to), or in the missed approach.
Prior to taxi, call the Nanaimo Radio and advise where you are on the field and ask for an advisory for departure. Once you have received the advisory, report which runway you are taxiing to and go ahead and taxi. Call again prior to entering the runway advising which direction you are departing. Go ahead and take off. Climb to circuit altitude (1,200') prior to any turn, and do not turn back toward the field prior to reaching 500' above circuit altitude (1,700'). Report leaving the control zone (5nm 2,500').
CYAZ - Frequency 123.25. MF Airport. MF procedures. Call "Hardy Radio on the Tofino RCO". Otherwise, same as Nanaimo.
For both of the uncontrolled aerodromes below, ATF procedures apply. Announce yourself on the frequency 'in the blind' - there will be no response (unless it's another aircraft requesting clarification). These two airports will not appear on VatSpy or Vattastic when the frequency is active.
Announce prior to entering the zone. If you don't know which runway is in use, overfly the field 500' above circuit altitude to observe the wind sock and any traffic, then descend on the upwind side of the field to circuit altitude while turning around to cross the field midfield and join the downwind leg. Announce your intentions overhead the field 500' above, overhead the field at circuit altitude, and joining the downwind leg.
If, when arriving, you hear other traffic announcing their intentions, conform to the circuit direction in use. Join the circuit overhead at circuit altitude to join downwind, or straight to the downwind leg. Do not join the circuit direct to base or final!
Announce again turning base, final, and clear of the runway or in the missed approach.
CAT4 - Frequency 122.80. MF Area Airport. ATF procedures. Broadcast to "Qualicum Traffic". Right hand circuits runway 11.
CBS8 - Frequency 123.00. ATF Airport. ATF procedures. Broadcast to "Alberni Traffic".
